What to Wear – A Guide for Dog Moms & Dog Families

Written by Courtney Bryson

What do you wear to your dog’s photo session?

In this blog, I’m going to give you some quick concrete tips for dressing yourself (and your family) for your session. Even though the pups are the stars of the show, I’d love to include a few images with you too.

Choosing what to wear for your dog's photography session is a dauting task. Dog photographer Courtney Bryson breaks it down.
“My fashion philosophy is, if you’re not covered in dog hair, your life is empty” – Elayne Boosler

1. Start with a Color Palette When Planning What to Wear

Choose a color story like earth tones, neutrals, jewel tones, pastels. Next choose 3-4 colors in the palette to be the base. Everyone in the family can dress within the palette and you’re all guaranteed to look great together. For bonus points, pick your dog’s collar, bandana, and leash in the same palette as well.

2. Add Pattern, Print, & Texture

Choose muted & classic patterns to keep your look timeless. Pick textured fabrics like linen, denim, knit, corduroy. Textures give depth and visual interest to your clothing and contrasts beautifully with the texture of fur. Muted colors in the patterns help keep the focus on your connection and not your clothes.

3. Keep a Common Tonality

Pick separates that are equally dark or equally light. If you’re wearing a light colored top, choose light colored bottoms. If you choose a dark top, choose dark bottoms. This monochromatic value is universally flattering making everyone look a little taller and a littler leaner. In the same note, choosing well fitted clothes with sleeves to the elbow and skirts/pants to the knees or longer will also help elongate your body.

4. Layer

Add layers. Jewelry, scarves, jackets, cardigans, vests, & sweaters are easy ways to quickly change up your look and elevate your style.

Giving some thought to your own clothes before your session will make you feel more confident. You deserve to have more than just cell phone selfies with your best friend.

A great way to get inspiration is to visit Pinterest and create a board of what you like.
