Dog Photography Locations on a Walk Through Athens, Georgia’s Ben Burton Park
Ben Burton Park sits off Mitchell Bridge Road in Athens — 32 acres of wildlife preserve on the site of a former hydroelectric station built in 1896. Most people walk right through it without stopping to look at what's actually there.
But, it's one of those locations that rewards attention — and the more time you spend there, the more you find.
Here's what I look for, and why each spot works.
The Dirt Path
The first thing that catches my eye every time I enter Ben Burton Park is the narrow dirt path that winds along the right side of the field.
What makes it work for dog photography is the leading line. The path draws the eye directly forward — which means it draws the eye directly to your dog. It's a compositional gift that you don't have to create; it's just there.
The light along this path is soft and filtered through the trees, and the background stays clean and uncluttered.
The Big Oak Tree
Further into the park, the field opens up and a large oak tree dominates the left side. This tree is one of my favorite portrait spots in Athens.
The reason is access to sky. The tree stands in a long, narrow field, which means the light around it is open, directional, and clean — the qualities that make portraits glow rather than flatten. Early morning sessions here catch a soft mist that gives everything a quality that's hard to manufacture in editing.
The Secluded Grove
It took me three visits to Ben Burton Park before I found this one.
Just before the entrance bridge — technically before you're even in the park — there's a small opening in the trees that leads to a secluded grove most people walk right past. Because it's easy to miss, it stays quiet. No foot traffic, no distractions, no competition for the space.
Once you step inside, the grove opens into a wide oval. The trees create natural diffusion on all sides, which means the light is beautiful.

Why Athens?
Athens is a drive from Atlanta, but it's worth it — especially if you have a connection to the city, to UGA, or to the surrounding area. Ben Burton Park photographs like somewhere much further from town than it is. For clients who want that quiet, deeply natural feel without being too far off the beaten path, this is the location.
